Fly Tying Vises come in all shapes and sizes.

Let us help you find the one for you. Of all the fly tying vises on the market there are only one or two that you will really like. The question is which ones?

What we are going to do is go through the characteristics of a tying vise and you can work out what you need and what you can do without. What you have to remember is that all the features in a fly tying vice are there for a reason, it maybe that the fly fishing flies you are going to be tying don't need these features so why spend the money having them?

The Vise

The Tying Vise is undoubtedly the most important piece of fly tying equipment you are going to need. This has to be able to grip the hook no matter what its size or shape. At te same time presenting the hook to you as freely as possible, to allow you to tie the fly.

The best type of vice is a lever action vice - this works by drawing the jaws of the vice (with the hook in between them) back into the body of the vice, it does this through the use of a cam lever at the back.
Because you are drawing the jaws back into the body you can judge the tension on the hook better.

When choosing a vice you don't need to spend a fortune on it, but don't pick up the cheapest one either. As we said earlier this is the most important piece of fly tying kit you will get, so choose wisely.
Pick one in the 30 to 60 Euro range. If or should we say when you catch the tying bug you can up grade to a better one.

What Features should you look for in a Fly Tying Vise

When you are looking for the ultimate vise to do you a life time, look for the following features:-

  • Full Rotary
  • Smooth Rotation
  • Tool Steel Jaws
  • Hardened cam
  • Rotational lock
  • Rotational Drag Adjustment
  • Forcing Cone Adjusts Tension
Of course if you are looking for a Fly Tying Vise to do you for life you should look for one with a life time guarantee. Most of the well known brands offer a life time guarantee with their tying vises.
